Understanding When to Create a New Workorder

Workorders represent an item of work, or you could think of it as a specific task for a specific person. When creating Workorders in a Project, the "dividing line" for starting a new Workorder is when there is a different person responsible for part of the work in a Project.

The primary driver for how Workorders were designed to work and be tracked was legal compliance. This is kept first and foremost. There are other things that play into how Workorders are handled, but they are always viewed as secondary to the legal requirements. For example, the Start/End date windows on a Workorder are driven by Hatchdates from the PulletFlock to which a Workorder may be attached. If a Workorder was created from a Workorder Template, then fields such as the Start/End dates are locked and may not be edited by the user, because those dates are governed by legal compliance.

Understanding the Sidebar

The sidebar on the left only has one editable field; "Linked WO".

Linked WO: This lists the "sibling" Workorders that exist in the same Project to which the current Workorder belongs. The purpose of linking to another workorder is to establish a dependency. If a Workorder is linked to a sibling, the sibling must be closed before the current WO can be closed. Note that the current Workorder is not in the list; you are not permitted to link a Workorder to itself, since that makes no sense at all.

Clicking the Project lookup button will open the Project to which the Workorder belongs. Since some Projects may be PRIVATE, the user must be a participant in the Project by virtue of owning a workorder in the Project, or a Workorder SysAdmin (the highest level of permission), for the lookup to be permitted.

The only editable fields in the sidebar are the "Linked WO" combo-box and the "Closed" check-box. All of the light-blue fields are non-editable.

Cloning a Workorder

You can use the "Clone This Workorder" button on the sidebar to create a duplicate of the workorder that is currently being viewed. Only workorders that are not created from a workorder template may be cloned. When cloning a workorder, the following fields are not copied:

There will be an Event created that notes which workorder was used as the source for the cloning operation.

Sending an Email Notification

This feature requires Microsoft Outlook to be installed. Clicking this button will send an email notification to the assigned user. This is useful for cases where you want to make sure that the assigned user becomes aware of the workorder ASAP.

Workorder Queues

A workorder queue is similar to the concept of a workorder "status". This is to be an indicator of what is happening with the workorder. Following are some details that may be helpful to understanding the use of each queue:
